Thats bcoz if u design ur chair for a person of 5.5 feet …a person of 6 feet may not be comfortable….And besides..if u can increase the height by 1 m …its kind of like the person feels like he is standin up wen in a crowd……Mebbe i am bein over ambitious …but think abt it ….And ya..”Ur site is very good!!

I cant suggest anything for voice-activation part ! but we can discuss in the driving mechanism / motor selection in detail.
Well, what I would suggest is to make the wheel-chair differentially driven vehicle, with a motors attached to each wheel through timing-belt (easy and fast).
Chain drive and gears are OK, but they tend to have some backlash.
Timing belt
If the motor can be mounted inline with hub, its perfect. So you need to have gearbox on the motor. Motors are generally available with matching gear-boxes, with gear-box, motor looks like a bit bigger than actual –size, but with low speed and large torque. You have to choose how much reduction you need.
Motors
Size of gear-box is usually same as the size of motor. It just gets longer. Diameters of gear-box is usually same as the diameter of motor. Hub motors are for comparatively high speed, like for riding bicycle, its costly too. I really don’t recommend hub-motors
hub-motors are useful where there is space-constraint !like bicycles. You can use normal DC motors with gear head mount them inline with wheel axis, then you don’t even have to worry about any driving mechanism. Normal DC motor with gear head as one unit mount it on the wheel chair, connect the output shaft on gearbox to the axis of the wheel with a simple coupler.
So DC Brushless motors with gearbox would be easier. Timing-belts are used a lot in mopeds, motor-cycles and even in cars. It should be available cheaply in India- try in any car/motor-cycle repair shop. Well, you can always reduce speed by feeding low current assuming torque won’t reduce!! But you should apply rated voltage with low current using PWM.
Flexible couplers:
They should be cheaply available in India. If it doesn’t work due to space limitations, you can mount the motor and gearbox behind the wheelchair, and then use timing-belt
if timing belt cannot be obtained, then chain-drive can be used !
Finally, if you still have time, you can use mechanical clutch, to disconnect the motor, so that in case of battery failure, the person can use his hands to drive the wheel chair.

Looks like you have a very wonderful team going. And if you are doing this in 3 months it is pretty ambitious too but if you got what it take you can definitely do it.
I really liked what Banala said about using Brushless DC motors. I hadn’t seen them before coming to US but here that is what we have used in all our projects.

The have planetary gear train systems and save a lot of space. Maxon is pretty expensive but look for micromo or other vendor sin India. My disclaimer is I am not sure how this might fit in your things but something you can explore.
Also if you all have the passion try visualizing telling the wheel chair to move forward and u sitting in it and moving forward. visualize telling it to trun right and u cutting a sharp right corner in it. And try doing it every single day. It will make you work more fun and every easy.

inexpensive controllers. check with Joshua at evsolutions. com. He has
provided hub motors for wheelchair use for another customer recently,
and should be able to help you.

The brushless hub motors use Hall sensors to control the timing of the
pulses to the windings. these are open collector signals generally
between 12v and 0 so you could pad them down to ttl level. depending on
the number of motor phases and magnet poles (typically 3 x 16) you will
get 48 pulses per revolution by monitoring these sensors or 16 per
revolution from each of the 3 sensors.. driving a bldc motor with a
microprocessor is not really a job for someone without any experience
in
this technology. there are plenty of programming examples for the PIC
at
Microchip or for the many other controllers available. My advice would
be to back up a bit and learn more about motor control before taking on
a project this big.

I don’t get your idea about the battery. Battery is a collection of
cells.
I think, you have to use rechargable batteries of needed capacity and
LED
ACID BATTERY IS a good choice. If you want weight reduction, then you
need
to go for LIon Batteries or similar which will be very costly.
Will discuss all matters when I am in the college. Hope you recovered

I also suggest you to go for SMF battery for your project. You need to calculate the battery voltage and its Ah capacity.
Your blog about the project is very good. This will encourage other project batches too. My congratulations to everyone of your batch. However, I request you to deeply involve in the design aspects rather than spending more time to beatify your web page.
The presentation of the project proposal was not up to the mark and your team members could not convey the project idea fully to the faculty.
I could not see your page 1 flow chart ( checkup if anything wrong in your page). The software flow chart page 2 ( keyboard control) seems to contain some logical errors. Please correct it. You have a lot of work that are not yet started. I fear, if you are going at this rate, you will not be able to finish even the design fully.
You may take it as a warning or as a advice.

Bicycles hub motors are normally of high RPM. May be you will get hub motors suitable for wheel chair application also.
If you are able to get motor from China it is fine. Do not worry about the driver. You can make good driver by yourself ( even though it is difficult). In India no one is making BLDC.
We will discuss about the problems in software when you are in the college.
The success of a project depends upon the decisions taken at the right time.
Now it is high time to take a bold decision about the motor.

One company in Banagalore is making DC motors. One of my friend bought amotor with the gear and an electrical clutch for his automatic gate. I will let u know the address of the company if you need.
The H brdige drive has a lot of bells and whistles, But I do not suggest you because of the other inherent probelms that you ar going to face when making the hardware. Moreover, you dno not require many of the features now for the prototype. You have to add adtional heat sinking arrangement for th chip which will be a problem for you in practise.
Anw way. decide the motor first and then think of the driver.
I could notice the same type of logical errors in the first page of the flow chart also

Also I suggest you to go for H bridge with discrete components whihc will be more reliable than the “chips”

Dear Nisha,
There are BLDC motors with in bulit drivers and sensors. But many of the BLDC motors are coming without the drivers. So you need to make one and use an MCU to control it. You can download the sftware for driver ( PIC) from microchip site
However, for this application, I think you can use HBridge for controlling the motor speed. Some times you will have to use regenerative braking in which bldc will be better.

do you want to go? Wheelchair motors at 150 RPM will be useable from

I’m not positive about how well they might match your specs exactly,
but have you considered the NPC gearmotors from National Power Chair,
being as these are wheelchair motors? The NPC-41250 looks to be pretty
close at 93 RPM at 12V. I don’t believe it’s going to get too close to
150W however…

In our project we thought of implementing many features, but couldnot add all those features due to limited time.
You can look for adding regenerative breaking in your project.
also u can think abour adding some clutch mechanism
then the design mech. design itself u can do lot of modifications..

good day! Thanks for your reply. no need to apologize for the delayed response. have you heard the quote “better late than never”? hehe… actually our voice controlled motorized wheelchair is almost finish and we are sheduled to defend it on the first week of august. the components we used are the same as yours. for the electronic part we used PIC16F877 and HM2007. for the mechanical part we used 12V Wiper Motor, 8 teeth industrial sprocket, 15 teeth BMX sprocket, 4″D caster wheel, and BMX chain. But instead of using a wheelchair made of steel, we used a wooden chair. Why? to make it easier for us to modify the chair if needed. Is it really necessary? not really, but we did it anyway. our plan is to add sensors on the back of the chair for obstacle detection. The sensors will be normally off. It will be turned on only if the user commanded the chair to reverse or move backward. we are not going to have speed control. the speed will be constant. our objective is to be able to drive the chair even on an inclined plane with a maximum of 15 degrees inclination. our maximum load or the weight of the passenger is 190 lbs. We havent perform any testing yet. so we are not sure if its going to work. we are doing our project by reverse engineering or should i say cheating.hehe. we did not compute for anything. like how did we come up to using a 12V motor? we are going to finish it by experimentation. and we are running out of time. hehe. i am afraid that our panel may ask us to have speed control. do you have yours? what are your available commands? or simply how your wheelchair works? i am also worried about the computation. it is needed in the documentation. i am currently reading Applied robotics II and http://www.simreal.com. Any suggestion? This is really humiliating. I call myself an engineering student yet i dont know that much. And worst, i am a graduating student.hehe. i really appreciate your response and i will consider it a blessing if you reply again. thank you very much.

Yes we have done speed control in our wheelchair. You can control the speed by using PWM technique.How are you driving the motors? We have used MOSFET H-Bridge for controlling the motor. So you can change the PWM and can vary from 20% to 80% for achieving different speeds. Please let me know about your driver ckt, so that we can discuss this in detail related to your ckt.

We did a research and found a simple driver circuit. It is composed of NPN Bipolar Junction Transistors and relays.
So how does your wheelchair works? How many commands do you have? what are the speeds available? the normal and fast speeds? the maximum weight it can carry to move?

In our wheelchair we used relay and MOSFETs for driving the motors. PWM technique is used for speed control. You can implement different speeds(from say 20% PWM to 100%). We have implemented 2 different speeds- one is minimum speed(30%PWM) which i remember, similar to average walking speed, second one is a bit more fast(70%). It was capable of carrying 150Kg in normal speed.
Code size, i am not remebering the exactly now.. But it was not too big. however you can manipulate it accoring to your logic…

aside from we are not informed very well with MOSFETs, we used BJTs because we just need a switch to turn N and OFF the motors since it already have a low speed and high speed terminal. We connected the wire to the highspeed. So our speed depends on the specs of the motor.
by the way, what motor did you used? we used wiper motors…

We have used permanent magnert DC motor(60W/100rpm. You can find those calculations in this page itself(February2007interactions). This is designed by us(after a lot of trials. please go through those interactions for more details ) and Manufacuted by one of the companies in bangalore, India.
We have programmed it in MPLAB(assembly level programming). However if if you are not confortable with this you can go ahead with BASIC(I guess, its PIC BASIC)right?.Only problem with compilers is if you are looking for precisie interrupt service routines , it wont be be that accurate like assebler..anyway here i think you dont need such precision….

Hi, I’m Sadheera from Sri Lanka. I found your email address from one of my group members. Also my group members told me that you are happy to help to success our project. I think you already know that we are going to build a voice controlled wheelchair which was built by your group in the last year.(we are not going to make same kind of wheelchair, but a product with advance futures) Here we are going to use hm2007 chip to recognize voice commands & pic16F877 as the controller.
So we need to get know that what type of motors & motor controllers were used to build your wheelchair. Because we need to build a speed control unit to increase or decrease the speed of the wheelchair as the user needs. To build a something like that, still we couldn’t find a good motor & a motor controller to archive our target.
If I’m not wrong, did you use wiper motors? Because when I zoomed-in the pictures of your wheelchair, the motor which I saw is like a wiper motor. So I need to know, can we use a wiper motor to archive our target. Is it enough to carry a man at a high speed? If it’s yes, then what are the specifications of the motor which was used by your group?
So please be kind enough to send the information that you have as soon as you can. Because the time we have is very limited.

you control your speed by increasing and decreasing the current going through the motor by PWM…

how did you know that your min speed(30% PWM)is the average walking speed?
also, im now a little bit bothered with the transistors we used…
aside from allowing speed control, is there something else that makes BJTs inferior to MOSFETs?

what i am really interested about is how you did your testing? i mean how many trials did you do? and is there any basis for doing it in such number?
We are about to begin our testing this weekend. And it will be included in our chapter 4 which is analysis and interpretation of data and results. friends told us that the number of trials does matter. any suggestion?

Again delayed response!!!! i was really busy with my works…
By changing the pulse width, you are effectively varying the average voltage.. and thereby the speed of the motor…
Initially we have done lot of experiments by mannually running the chair, as well as just connecting the battery directly to the motorised wheelchair. From that we found some speed which is close to average walking speed. Then using differet PWM we tried to achieve this speed. This calculation is depends on the dimensions of the wheelchiar, the mechanism etc…like the diameter of the wheel…You can find some internal interactions regarding this…

Sorry for the delayed reply.
We have done our project in MPLAB(Assembly programming. You may use C compiler as well. Anyway the logic is not very complex.
Since 8 bit output pins of HM2007 is connected to the input pins of the Microcontroller, in the program we can scan the status of these pins according to this you can generate the control signals at the out pins for controlling the motor driver….

I went through your calculations and you have got the rpm caculation as 30rpm so why is that you have used 100rpm motor? Is it because of the chian-drive(gear ratio),if yes what ratio have you used?

Hi Vinutha,
Hope u have gone through the power calculations of the motor.(Pls refer our interactions). We had done so much trial and error/experiments before finalizing the motor. There were so many dependent parameters involved in these calculations, for example the diameter of the wheel, dimensions of the chain sprocket mechanism etc. etc.. Then we related all these things with a practical speed, which is close to the average walking speed of a human being. Though we calculated as 100rpm,finally we went for a 60rpm motor.. You may please refer our previous interactions for more details on this..
Then Motor driver part- we have used MOSFET H-Bridge circuit for driving the motor. I would be glad to help you out if you people could design a driver ckt and discuss with me. The intention of the webpage is to help and support people who are interested in design/Development. I can very well give you the detailed schematics,but i personally feel, copying something is not really good..So please try to design a driver ckt, if you find any difficult at any stage please feel free to post your doubts, i will try my level best to help you….

There is a successive approximation ADC is there in the input block of HM2007, which converts the analog signal -coming from the mike to the analog input- to digital form, then this digital data will be stored in the SRAM memory locations-00 to 40- Then in listening mode the comparison is done in the HM2007 itself. when both the data match, HM2007 will give the output (8bit)and which will be equivalent to the memory location where the matched word is stored. Please find the complete circuit diagram in the hardware section of this website. If you have any further concerns please feel free to write to me..

Hi jain,
You may go for full bridge with 4 MOSFETS or may use MOSFETS and Relays since among the diagonal MOSFETs in the bridge one will be in switching(ON/OFF only)and the other,is used for the speed control.

Hi Gautam,
Please let me know for which application you are using HM2007? There are a few other chips available for voice recording/play back purpose. However if you want to use it for a project like our Wheelchair, i think HM2007 is the simplest and easiest one.
Noe your second question- about the voltage levels of HM2007 output…
All the Output pins are TTL compatible..i.e logic high is ideally 5Volt and logic low is 0volt… See, the latch- 74LS373 is also a TTL compatible chip. So i don’t clearly understand your question about level transition.

You are right, HM2007 is a CMOS LSI chip, But i was trying to convey you is that its output pins are TTL COMPATIBLE. i.e. logic high is +5volt and logic low is 0.
Please note most of the controllers we use, are based on CMOS logic, however the IO logic of most of them are TTL compatible. Please refer more on common IO logics….

Hi Saranya,
If you want to check the SRAM, you need to interface it some cktry which can give the input.. or you may try feeding inputs manually (after establishing the necessary connections)and can check the output.. But may I know in what context you suspect your SRAM malfunctioning?..Have you faced any problem with SRAM when you interfaced…?
Then with reference to your query on Display.. If your memory location -where you saved your digitally converted data- is higher than 09(Note, you can store your voice input to any memory location from 00 to 40)then you need two digits to visualize it. But this display is an optional section, its only needed if you want to cross check whether HM2007 is giving the correct output or not..

…today,i gave the input using a trainer kit and connected the output to led’s in the kit.and..when we trained HM2007 the output was not satisfactory.we faced some problems while retriving the word. may i know if the training process involves just entering the word for storing and when we repeat the word,the memory location would be displayed? Hi Jan,
H-Bridge ckt was not so expensive. We might be mentioning something else in that discussion.
We did lot of experiments before finalizing the H-Bridge.At last we have designed a ckt with one MOSFET(IRF 150), one DPDT relay, one BJT (BC 547-for driving the MOSFET) and one power transistor(TIP 122 for driving the relay)-for driving a motor(with speed and direction control.
In any case the cost will be less than Rs.500/-

Hi Saranya,
Please check your connections once again. If HM2007 is good, then it should blink. Anyway please go through page no 5 of HM2007 datasheet. Please do the memory check, keeping the WAIT pin low. If its working properly then both HM2007 and HY6264 is good.If so there is something wrong with your mike interfacing.. If its not doing the memory check properly, once again rewire and do the same.. HM2007 wont go bad so easily..

how to check wheather hm2007l working properly or not, in my case i made the circuit mentioned in hm2007l datasheet, but not get desired result means after giving 5v supply voltage to hm2007l ready indication led not turned ON, i double check connection also disassemble circuit connection & make one more time circuit connection,how i know is me make mistake in making circuit connection or hm2007l working improperly, also for hm2007l working as a voice training mode & recognition mode.

Gautham: my Hm2007 data enable pin(falling edge latch) output is very low it decreases from 0.2 volts to 0 volts while latching the data.,so i cant latch the data how to check practically whether the data has been stored in the ram while training because while training my led blinks very lightly so i have a doubt whether the data is stored in my ram. i have attached the datasheet of hy6264. i am using this ram in my circuit instead od hm6264.u plz see the datasheet and say can i use it instead of hm6264.
Answ: Please go through page no 5 of HM2007 datasheet. Please do the memory check, keeping the WAIT pin low. If its working properly then both HM2007 and HY6264 is good.
Gautam: my circuit is working well. i got the output. i directly connected 26th and 28 pin if ram to supply thanks a lot.
how to interface hm2007 with 8051 microcontroller ? can i connect the output of the latch to input port of microcontroller?
Answ: Yes you can connect te output pins to the IO pins of 8051. Remember, you must properly set the IO pins of 8051 as INPUT.
Gautam: which pcb design software can i use for the hm2007 circuit.if u have the download link pls send?
Answ:You may use any PCB design software for designing the board. Designing the HM2007 board is same as that of any other board. I used ORCAD. there are many softwares are available like this. PROTEL, EDWIN XP, KEYCAD etc are some.. However for beginners ORCAD or PROTEL is not the best choise and also these are a bit costly softwares. You may look for some softwares like TraxMaker, PADS etc.. these may be available for free download, you may find so many of these tools in the free CDs which comes along with technical magazines like EFY, Digit etc..

The 26th pin of SRAM is CS2(Active high Chip Select. You must connect this pin directly to VCC.

hey,
we followed the steps for the training of the hm2007.everything is going smoothly till we press the train button. but after that when v speak the word the LED does not blink. so the word is not gettin stored. we connected the 26th pin of hm6264 directly to vcc n checked too, but no luck. v did the memory check and it is clearing. so we dont understand what the problem is. Please can u tell us what it might be.?

If you are confident about the connections, Then only reason i could find is input/ audio signal level. The HM22007 AGC (automatic gain control) specification is 0 dB to 40dB. For example, an acceptable input level range is 20mV to 0.2V.Please make sure your audio input to the chip satisfy this…

Answer:Hi, if you are sure that you could train the chip as per the instructions. Then it should work. Once the training process is over the chip will automatically switch to recognition mode..i.e. if anything you spell without pressing any of the buttons the chip will be continuesly in listening/recognition mode. Sorry for the delayed response .
After testing the circuit on the breadboard, we have designed the PCB and assembled the circuit and it was working wonderfully. You should design the layout carefully. its better to make a separate PCB for the voice reco part and the power part(driver section).
We have not implemented the breaking mechanism and feed mechanism due to lack of time. Speed control is switch selectable. there were 4 different speed settings done with PWM control
We were using 12 (2 no.)volt AMRON maintenance free lead acid battery. Please see the photographs given in the gallery section. that time we could manage those big car batteries only. You may go for smaller one with required specs. All the specs are given in this webpage…

hi i am rahul…here is my proj descrption..it send a signal through “FM Tx” to “FM Rx”..this must be given to HM2007 to train and recognize…as the functioning of HM2007 goes if there is a match O/p mem location is displayed….HERE IS MY PROBLEMMMM!!!!…HOW DO I CONNECT THE FM Rx to HM2007 mic input…should i just replace the mic with the o/p wires of “FM Rx”…what is the o/p of the Rx (is it electrical or analog i.e acoustic) if it is electrical can i directly give to “MIC IN” of my hm2007 ic….what should i do…please help me…i have 7 days left to submit my proj in college…plz plz plz help!!!!

This is really a wonderful project.
I am currently in final year of an undergraduate course and have to do a project too. I came up with this idea and even submitted an abstract which my college accepted.
I saw this site today and got a lot of valuable information to go about the project.
The only problem that I am facing currently is that I and my team mates are from a software background. We have no knowledge of hardware. We are definitely keen on learning but there seems to be just too much in this project.
I wanted to know whether it is possible for us to complete it within 6months. Completion includes learning the hardware mechanisms and then the implementation.
Please do reply soon. And also tell us how much time it took you to finish this project.
If you feel we wont be able to manage this project, please do let us know. We will think of some other ideas that have more software in them and submit them to our teacher before it is too late.

Hope by now u might have started working on something…
If you have some basic electronics background and , if you are passionate, i feel it is not very difficult to learn hardware..
we have finished the project within 6 months time…

im doin a similar project.we designed the entire circuit but it just doesnt work.the HM2007 circuit doesnt give any reaction.we built the circuit exactly as it is in the schematic.could you pls let us know any connection or interfacing mistakes in the schematic of HM2007 with HM6264,74ls373,7448

Hi Kanya,
We have used two 60 watt/120rpm Permanent Magnet DC motor with gears (Designed and got it Manufactured ) for driving the wheels… However now i would suggest you to go for hub motors if you could source it..
